Making Marple Better Together
CAMPAIGNS & PROJECTS
The society campaigns in its own right or with others on contentious issues and matters important to the people of Marple and that fit with our aims. We are always ready to look at issues of importance to members so please do get in touch to discuss things of concern to you.
We are limited in how many campaigns and projects we can concentrate on by the number of members who are available to take on some of the work involved. If you would like to be involved in contributing to a project group then please let us know.
CURRENT PROJECTS
SMBC has submitted the planning application for the Leisure and Community Hub to be built using funding from the Government Levelling Up Fund (LUF). We continue to monitor developments closely and are asking the Project Team to continue to consult with us as things develop. A link to the planning application (with all its 109 documents!) and our letter of response can be found by following the link below
For a couple of years now we have been wanting to develop a project that would see more trees planted across Marple. It soon became obvious that for this to work we would need the support of other groups in the area, and the approval of SMBC, who control many potential planting sites. As conversations developed both locally, and with groups like Cheshire Wildlife Trust, it became clear that our plans should expand to look at all aspects of green-space improvement and nature recovery.
Following a small and informal meeting of interested parties in February 2024, we are now contacting a wider range of groups and organisations, with a view to holding a “Big Green Conversation” event in the near future. We also want to hear from individuals who are keen to see “A Greener Marple”, so if you or any of your friends are interested, please contact us.
Marple District Centre Walking and Cycling Improvements have been proposed as part of the development of the Community Hub (see above) and funded by the overall funding given under the Government's LUF. A whole range of options for pedestrian crossings, cycle routes and coach laybys were included, all relating to use of the Hub.
There have also been unfunded proposals published recently which were subject to public consultation, presumably to gauge public opinion on how best to improve walking and cycling (“Active Travel”) in Marple. As a society we believe that an overall transport strategy for Marple is needed, considering all modes of transport and how best to integrate competing priorities.
Marple Civic Society believe that the Wharf is a key element of the canal heritage of Marple. ‘The Wharf’ in its broadest definition comprises the Warehouse, the two roving bridges, the Toll House and the banks of the Macclesfield Canal. Whilst the Society believed that the protection of all these features should take absolute priority in any development we were unsuccesful in persuading the planning authorities that more could be done with the site than the bland and unimaginitive development that is now occuring.
The one positive outcome is the saving of the warehouse by The Wharf Marple CIC - we look forward to the renovation and repurposing of this important building being completed.
